I used a fabric stabilizer first and let it dry so that it would have a stiffer surface. Then, you can wash it out. I'd never have thought to or that u could add distress ink to ribbon. I tried to stamp a message Home Sweet Home on a ribbon I added to a card and it slightly bled not giving a sharp image I'd wanted.
